Touring Blithewold

The Van Wickle family designed Blithewold to entertain and delight their guests. We honor our founding family’s long-standing tradition of gracious hospitality on Narragansett Bay by offering a variety of ways to experience this beautiful property.

Create Your Experience

Your group tour can be self-guided or a custom, guided tour. Docents tell the story of the Van Wickle/McKee family, the original owners of this beautiful seaside garden estate. Visitors experience breathtaking views of Narragansett Bay and see the Manor decorated with original furnishings just as it was when the family lived here. The guided tour continues through the grounds where magnificent trees and a variety of colorful gardens demonstrate Blithewold’s prominence in horticulture.

Feel free to further customize your group’s experience with special tree walks, gardens or manor tours, interactive workshops or lectures.

Self-Guided Tours

Is your group more likely to “take it all in” on their own without the structure of a guided tour? We’ve got that! Interpretive panels are strategically placed throughout the Estate which allows for a less formal, more meandering way to explore the mansion, gardens and grounds. Access the free audio tour for even more historical information!

Once you’ve spent an hour or so enjoying the property your group may like some light refreshments or lunch. Plenty of lovely spots to sit and enjoy; our covered porches overlooking The Bosquet or Narragansett Bay or our picnic area adjacent to the Rose Garden. The Kitchen at Blithewold is prepared to work with you to customize something special for your group.

Guided Tours

Today, change and discovery is ever-present at Blithewold. The archival collection is unusually rich, which means our staff and volunteers are constantly discovering “new” items. And outdoors on the Grounds the gardens change daily. We provide our guides with regular updates from our curatorial and gardens staff, keeping them fully up-to-date on what’s new indoors and out. Booking a guide ensures your group has the most complete and current tour option at Blithewold.

What to Expect During Your Guided Tour

Blithewold tour guides lead your group (parties of 8 or more) on a 90-minute tour of Blithewold’s Manor and Grounds. They tell the story of the Van Wickle/McKee family, the original owners of this beautiful seaside garden estate. Out on the grounds your guide will take you to each of the ten gardens, the Bamboo Grove, the Summerhouse and our Lord and Burnham greenhouse complex. Your tour will end with a Q & A and cold drinks served on the North West Porch.

Accessibility

  • The Visitors Center and Gift Shop at Blithewold
    • The Visitors Center building is fully accessible with ADA-compliant restrooms located inside. There is an all-terrain wheelchair that is available for use upon request.
  • The Manor House
    • The front entrance is accessible via a ramp. There is a small lip in the doorway that should be noted to avoid tripping. A smaller ramp may be requested to assist with this transfer in the event it is needed.
    • The First Floor is level with some raised thresholds between the Family Side of the Manor House and the staff side of the Manor House. There is a powder room next to the front entrance. This restroom is not ADA accessible but is available upon request for guests who are unable to traverse stairs.
    • The Second Floor is only accessible via the stairs as there is no elevator in the House. Audio and notebook tours complete with photos of the rooms are available for guests who are unable to climb the stairs.
    • The staff entrance, located at the side of the Manor House, opposite the Moongate, is accessible via a permanent ramp and has an ADA-compliant restroom located just inside the door.
  • The Grounds
    • The majority of the paths on the Blithewold Grounds are composed of 80% semi-loose gravel. This typically does not pose an issue to foot travel, though wheelchairs, walkers, and strollers with thinner (non-all-terrain) wheels tend to have difficulty with this terrain.
    • The different path materials, and the lengths of the paths, are marked on the map if your group requires this information.
    • There are benches to rest on throughout the property which are marked on the map to help you plan the best route for your group.
